Mega Chorio

Mega Chorio is another settlement on the southwest side of the island, which is inextricably linked to the mining history of the island. Like Mega Livadi, but also Koutalas and this area are rich in ore, that is why the operational period of the mines flourished. There was even a hospital in the area, which survives to this day. Around the settlement there are many ‘’mouths’’ (entrances of the galleries), while deposits of green quartz (a rock extremely rare in the world) have been found.

Nowadays, the settlement is uninhabited and ruined, while the buildings are in very poor condition. Opposite the Mega Chorio dominate Agios Charalambos and Aspros Pyrgos, a building of the Hellenistic period, which was probably part of an expanded system of frying pans. Opposite of it, you find the church of the Holy Trinity, where a big festival of the Holy Spirit is taking place and also the Holy Monastery of Panagia Evangelistria Akrotiriani and the famous Couch of the Cyclops (Psaropyrgos).
